Got Junk? Tech Disposal Made Safe: E-Recycling Your Old PCs with Secure Data Destruction

Old laptops in a closet. Retired servers under a desk. USB drives with who knows what on them. For most businesses, tech disposal feels risky, and it is. The answer isn’t just drop it at a recycler. A documented process that destroys sensitive data and keeps e-waste out of landfills is the way to go, and we do it for you!

Southwest Cloud Partners provides secure, NIST 800-88–aligned data destruction and e-recycling for our Managed IT clients in Las Vegas, Henderson, and Boulder City with chain-of-custody, proof of destruction, and responsible downstream handling.

What’s included in our Tech Disposal & E-Recycling service

1) Intake & chain-of-custody

  • Asset pickup or on-site handoff

2) NIST 800-88–aligned data destruction

  • Software wipe/overwrite with verification reports (HDD/SSD)
  • Cryptographic erase for BitLocker-encrypted drives where appropriate
  • Physical destruction (punch, crush, or shred) for media that cannot be wiped (or by policy)

3) Responsible e-recycling (ITAD)

  • Sort, test, and harvest reusable parts where policy allows
  • R2v3/e-Stewards–certified downstream partners for materials recovery
  • Documentation for your compliance files (GLBA/FTC Safeguards, HIPAA, IRS Pub. 4557, ISO 27001 controls)

4) Final reporting

  • Full asset reconciliation (serials, actions taken, method of sanitization)
  • Certificates of Destruction & Recycling for audit readiness

Windows 10 Devices

Why “just deleting files” isn’t enough

  • Risk: Drives and SSDs routinely hold emails, tax records, client PII, financials, and credentials—even after a simple format.
  • Compliance: Many SMBs fall under FTC Safeguards Rule, GLBA, HIPAA, or IRS Pub. 4557 expectations. Disposal is part of your WISP.
  • Modern media quirks: SSDs and NVMe drives need the right method (sanitize/crypto-erase or shred); degaussing works for spinning HDDs but not SSDs and renders drives unusable.

Off-site destruction: what we recommend

  • Off-site: We seal and transport media with chain-of-custody; destruction and reporting occur at a secured facility. Typically more cost-effective for larger batches.

What we take (and what we don’t)

We accept:

  • Desktops, laptops, thin clients, tablets, smartphones
  • Servers, switches/routers, firewalls, APs
  • Hard drives (HDD), SSD/NVMe, tapes, USBs, memory cards
  • Monitors (LCD/LED), docking stations, peripherals, cables, adapters
  • Printers/MFPs (with storage sanitized or removed)

Hazmat exclusions: Alkaline batteries in bulk, CRTs (case-by-case), leaking/compromised batteries, and non-IT appliances. Ask for the full list, there are safe options.

How our clients use this service

  • Office move or refresh: Replace Windows 10 devices, then securely retire the old hardware.
  • Staff offboarding: Collect device, extract needed data, wipe or shred, and close the loop with HR/Compliance.
  • Server decommission: Migrate to Azure/AVD/Windows 365, then sanitize and recycle racks, arrays, and backup media.

Your responsibility, simplified: our 5-step process

  1. Scope & schedule: Tell us locations, volumes, and any policy constraints.
  2. Pickup & inventory: We label, scan serials, and record asset details.
  3. Sanitization or destruction: NIST 800-88–aligned method per device type.
  4. Recycling & recovery: Certified downstream handling.
  5. Reports & certificates: Delivered to your compliance binder (WISP/ISMS).
